For Minnesota Families Interested in Fostering or Adopting from Minnesota Foster Care
Important notice: Foster Care and Adoption Education classes will begin a new curriculum in September 2023. Families interested in completing their education under the current curriculum should do so in July or August. Those who do not complete all components of the current curriculum prior to September will be required to begin their education again under the new curriculum.
This is one of the first steps for all families planning to adopt from Minnesota foster care, regardless of the agency or county you plan to adopt through. Children’s Home is a contracted provider through the State of Minnesota. We provide the required training for families who choose to work with any of the six PPAI agencies: Ampersand Families, Children’s Home Society of Minnesota, Evolve Family Services, Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, Nexus-Kindred Family Healing, or North Homes.
About Our Classes
Our classes will familiarize you with children waiting to be adopted, the needs they commonly have, and the adoption process. You will also have the opportunity to listen to panels of adoptive parents and waiting or adopted teens.
Topics we will cover include: an overview of the child welfare system, impact of prenatal drug/alcohol exposure, grief, loss and separation, trauma, abuse and neglect, mental health needs, attachment, cross-cultural and transracial parenting, permanency needs of older youth, concurrent planning, experiences of foster parents, experiences of birth parents, visitation and maintaining connections.
Class Requirements
To fulfill the education requirement, it is essential each prospective parent attend the entirety of each class and complete the pre-recorded trainings prior to receiving certification. You will receive more details about how to complete the pre-recorded trainings after completing your registration.
Class Dates & Registration
Current DHS Permanency Support Services contact funding for Foster Adoption Education concludes June 30, 2023. Future DHS contract grantees will provide information about upcoming Foster Adoption Education training when available in July or August 2023.
